The Theatre Faculty JAMU has organised two biennial events for the past several years - The Conference of Doctoral Studies in Theatre Practice and the Theatre Symposium Brno. This year we officially put together the PhD students and practising professionals.
The conference provides a platform on which different concepts of research in the field of theatre practice and theory can be contrasted. The event has been attended by over one hundred professional artists, researchers and doctoral students from Europe, Africa, North as well as South America and Asia who have come to Brno to introduce their research in progress to an international audience and discuss common methodological issues.
The Theatre Faculty has organised the international doctoral conferences since 2003. The founders of the tradition were prof. PhDr. Josef Kovalčuk, prof. Mgr. Petr Oslzlý a prof. Pentti Paavolainen of Helsinki Theatre Academy. The conference was originally profiled as a discussion forum of doctoral students of theatre schools. In addition to the Czech Republic and Finland, the founding countries were the United Kingdom, Sweden, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland.

Since 2015, the conference has intensified its interdisciplinary character, and it is headed towards an issue-based definition of its topic; in 2015 it was focused on artistic research.
Simultaneously, biennial international symposia of the theatre anthropology and scientific conferences were held at the Theatre Faculty of Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno since 1996. Amongst significant figures who participated in the symposium are e.g. Richard Schechner, Nicola Savarese, Joachim Fiebach, Ivo Osolsobě, Wojciech Dudzik, Ivan Vyskočil or Bořivoj Srba.
